Crash
Despite having such stars as Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraser, Don Cheadle, and Thandie Newton, it is a powerful moment featuring Michael Pena that fills up the poster. If you want to see a star-power poster for the film, just check out this instantly forgettable version.
Jarhead
Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Chris Cooper, and Jamie Foxx: Two rising stars and two Oscar winners. Not a bad combination. But instead of showing these men standing out in the desert we are given the memorable image of burning oil wells reflected in a dog tag.
Syriana
Yes, it does feature George Clooney front and center. But most people probably had to look pretty hard to realize it was him. Add to that the fact that Matt Damon, Chris Cooper, William Hurt, and Christopher Plummer are on the poster in name only and you have a very brave design indeed.
Walk the Line
Once again, we do see the star's face on the poster here, but only obscurely. Instead of selling the star power of Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, the poster wisely focuses on the icon of Johnny Cash himself, with a design that looks like it could've been made back when Cash was at his prime.
War of the Worlds
A Tom Cruise movie poster that doesn't feature his head taking up 3/4 of the page? Hard to imagine. But here it is, with the focus being not on the star but on the alien attackers instead.
