Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (2019)
When the first thing a movie poster does is scream "low budget straight to video release" you know there's something wrong. About the only thing this poster has going for it is the sweet smile of Sophia Lillis. Yet even that seems out of place given the context. One assumes from the basic layout that they were attempting to mimic the original book covers but it feels as if they started to do that and then discarded the idea partway through. The original book cover features the hidden staircase. Why not actually give us a glimpse of her finding that? Instead, she is just finding that the movie is rated PG and that Ellen Degeneres is one of the executive producers.
Based on the lighting it is simultaneously dusk, late at night, and the middle of the afternoon. Meanwhile, what exactly are her friends doing in the background / alternate plane of existence? Their expressions seem completely inappropriate for the situation. The whole thing feels like a rushed sales poster. Someone was given a couple photos from the film shoot and half an hour to patch something together for a sales pitch and somehow they never did get around to making a proper design.
